3 Sentences Demonstrating the Power of the Comma

3 Sentences Demonstrating the Power of the Comma 3 Sentences Demonstrating the Power of the Comma 3 Sentences Demonstrating the Power of the Comma By Mark Nichol The three sentences that follow delineate the significance of the consideration or oversight of a comma can have in facilitating appreciation of a sentence. 1. Following two hours at the bar, Jones said Smith was too smashed to even think about driving, and Smith demanded that Jones take him home. This sentence wrongly suggests that two hours after Jones and Smith showed up at a bar, Jones offered the expression (to Smith?) that Smith was too flushed to even think about driving; it appears to be odd that after Jones went up against Smith, the last would request a ride home. Notwithstanding, Jones is relating, a lot later (and to another gathering), the way that two hours after they showed up at the bar, Smith was too tanked to even think about driving; his interest for a ride was not in light of an angry remark. Embeddings a comma after said to make â€Å"Jones said† an incidental attribution explains that Jones offered the expression later, not that night: â€Å"After two hours at the bar, Jones stated, Smith was too smashed to even think about driving, and Smith demanded that Jones take him home.† 2. Smith conceded that he thought about the structure side, yet he didn’t know an entire hell of a great deal about the assembling side. As composed, this sentence recommends that in spite of the fact that Smith recognized so anyone might hear that he knew about plan, he clearly minded his own business his obliviousness of assembling. In any case, however the setting isn't clear in disconnection, Smith gave the two snippets of data. So as to convey that reality, the two segments of the sentence must be equal (â€Å"he conceded this and that†), and the comma must be precluded: â€Å"He conceded that he thought about the structure side however he didn’t know an entire hell of a ton about the assembling side.† (A rehash of that can be embedded after in any case, however it is discretionary.) 3. This is the last known picture of on-screen character Robin Williams presenting with a fan. This subtitle going with a photo of Williams and a unidentified individual can be perused two different ways: It is the last one he took with an admirer before his passing (and the presence of someone else in the photograph is significant), or it is the last photo taken of him before he kicked the bucket (and for some odd reason it was taken with a fan). Indeed, even outside of any relevant connection to the issue at hand, the main translation is suspect; except if the article the photograph goes with explicitly relates to the qualification of Williams being captured with a fan (not likely), it’s practically sure that the fan’s nearness in the photograph is superfluous to the differentiation of the image as the last one known to highlight Williams before his passing, and the expression â€Å"posing with a fan† ought to be treated as a needy condition: â€Å"This is the last known picture of on-screen character Robin Williams, presenting with a fan.† Need to improve your English shortly a day? The On The Beauty Of Lionfish - 1162 Words

Lionfish come with red, maroon or brown stripes and specks on their body and flashy fins. Their beautiful long fins flowing gracefully in the water and dramatic colors are fascinating and inspiring. No doubt lionfish are one of popular aquarium fishes as well as painting subjects. As my final project, I want to create a captivating image, while enjoying exploration of the beauty and details of lionfish. For the underwater backdrop, I want to suggest a coral reef environment. A solid or simple blue underwater backdrop would be sufficient to show the beauty of lionfish, but it is too plain for my taste. I decide to paint underwater ripples along with a brain coral. The challenge is creating a background that doesn’t compete against the flamboyant and colorful lionfish, yet adds enough interest to the viewer’s eye. Who is to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet Discuss. Essay Example

Who is to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet? Discuss. Paper For many years people have argued and discussed the ways in which different characters may be regarded to contribute towards the death of Romeo and Juliet. There may be many reasons for the death of these two young lovers and in this essay I am going to discuss the characters that may be considered to play a part in the tragedy. There are a number of characters in the play that participate and contribute to the tragic events of the play. The motivation of each character, along with the involvement placed in the play, contributes to our thoughts and provides a definite answer in reaching a conclusion. We soon come to relate with the characters and see how each of them is connected to the lovers death. Different aspects and fate combine to cause the death of these two star crossed lovers. This particular tragedy is about two people who died for one anothers love. Shakespeare wrote this play going against family traditions at the time, and wrote about two people who married each other out of love. Conversely, the two lovers had not thought about the consequences and as a result, they both ended up dying tragically. Discuss. specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer Most of the characters fall in love at first sight; Romeo and Juliet, spoiling for a brawling fight; Mercution and Tybalt. Old Montague and Capulet act like adolescents in their continuing feud with one another, even getting involved in the fighting. Old Capulet orders for his lady to hand him a sword as Montague defiantly says, Thou villain Capulet! Hold me not. The Capulets and Montagues have used their swords dishonourably by fighting against each other and staining the swords with the blood of neighbours. The nurse acts more like Juliets excitable younger sister than a responsible adult. Only the prince and Benvolio, and later on Friar Laurence, show any sense of responsibility in rationalising and relaxing in certain circumstances. The prologue suggest that fate is to blame for Romeo and Juliet being star crossed lovers; being born into the feuding families, but we cannot blame fate when there are people who will not stop fighting with each other. Some people consider us to decide our own fate and these two characters fight with their own free will. Furthermore, Shakespeare has created a feuding society in Verona, between the Capulets and Montagues; these two houses of society are to blame for the death to a large extent. Even before the scenes, the reader can see that the two households hated one another from the prologue in which the ancient grudge is referred to. Although these two families brawl with each other, no rational suggestion is made in order to stop them. Prince Escalus, who is in charge of what happens in Verona, could be considered blameworthy for the death, as he is unable to stop it. He is there to highlight and emphasise upon the political points in life, such as peace. It is only at the end that he says that he should have been firmer, and I, for winking at your discords too, have lost a brace of kinsmen. All are punished. but it is the death of the lovers not his authority that reconciles the families. Along with the Montagues, the Capulet household are responsible for maintaining the feud. Each family have authority over their household to argue with each other. Not either of them chose to stop the quarrelling. During the beginning of the play, Lord Capulet is eager to get involved in the fighting, and Lady Capulet seeks revenge on the Montagues for the death of Tybalt. She demands For blood of ours shed blood of Montague. This shows a lack of tolerance, as they are not prepared to hear the whole story as they also lack in the basic qualities of civilisation, We will have vengeance for it, fear not. The Capulets are also to blame for the deaths as they denied the wishes of Juliet and never listened to her opinions. Unlike Lord and Lady Montague who are concerned about Romeo, Lady Capulet is a cold, unsympathetic mother, and Lord Capulet is a tyrannical figure that warns Juliet that he will drag her on a hurdle thither if she thinks to defy his orders. This is seen when she refuses to marry Paris. Juliet has no one to turn to therefore must to rely on the nurse. It is shown that wealth over rides love in the Capulet way of life. Lord and Lady Capulet were partly responsible for keeping the feud going. Lord and Lady Montague like the Capulets, were also responsible for keeping the feud going. If they had been more understanding, Romeo would not have felt he had to keep secrets from them. They had authority over their household, and could have stopped the quarrelling if they wanted to. They should have paid more attention to Juliets wishes and listened to her opinions. They were too hard on her when she refused to marry Paris. The Nurse plays a critical role in Romeo and Juliet. Her relationship with major characters and her part in the secretive romance of the two lovers causes the plays action to move quickly and in a powerful way. The Nurse acts as Shakespeares pawn to guide the events of the play in a dramatic manner. The nurse has an important role in Juliets life. She is almost a mother to her who advises her about her relationship with Romeo. However, she can often behave irresponsibly throughout the play. She influences Juliet and enables her to meet with Romeo in secrecy. She understands how little love her mother gives and encourages her to go out and have fun. Go, girl, seek happy nights to happy days. The nurse is a simple woman, genuinely fond of Juliet with a bawdy sense of humour. She starts off as an amusing character, but as the play progresses and finally finishes in a tragic scene, everyone questions her part in the misfortune. The Nurse is an accomplice alongside Friar Laurence in bringing the lovers together. The Nurse is immersed in Juliets affairs and strives to help with her plans. The Nurses desire is simply to keep fourteen-year-old Juliet content. Her obstacle is her sense of duty to Lord and Lady Capulet, though this never seems to deter her actions. Unlike Friar Laurence, the nurse doesnt warn Juliet of the consequences when defying her parents and meeting Romeo in secret. Her only motive to get involved is due to her excitement and understanding of the meaning to Juliet. She doesnt really know how much Juliet really loves Romeo as she only praises either Paris or Romeo when it is the right time. She praises Paris in the beginning of the play by and then admires Romeo, by describing his physical attributes, though his face be better that any mans, yet his legs excels all mens, but then approves of Paris when it is time for the wedding. She describes Romeo as a dishcloth compared to Paris when she said that Romeo could not be compared to any other man. She contradicts her opinions. After Tybalts death, the Nurse becomes less sympathetic and later when Capulet orders Juliet to marry Paris; she defends Juliet at first but later pragmatically suggests that Paris would not be so bad after all. When the Nurse suggests that Juliet should forget about Romeo and marries Paris, she loses Juliets trust and confidence. Juliet decides to seek the help of Friar Laurence; thereafter she no longer involves the Nurse in her secret plans. Friar Laurence is a well-intentioned man who advises Romeo to be more cautious and sensible about the decisions he makes. He knows that Romeo and Juliets love will cause trouble and advises them Wisely and slow: they stumble that run fast His premonition violent delight have violent ends is proved well founded. He advises the couple to be wary and to pace themselves, but this is not executed in a practical way. . He feels that Romeo is very hasty in his decisions, having been so preoccupied with Rosaline, and states, Young mens love then lies, Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes. He often contradicts himself, as he does not support his point with a valid motive; he just pushes their haste. The friar is taking the lead and is dominant over Juliet as he encourages her to deceive her parents. Be strong and prosperous in this resolve. The friar advises Juliet about the poison and soon becomes involved in the scenario. Her parents are also unaware of this situation. He is a holy man and should have respected the Capulets wishes and yet he ignores that image and want love to blossom in the eyes of Romeo and Juliet. He hopes that it will reconcile the families, For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households rancour to pure love. It is ironic as it is the lovers death, which brings about this outcome. When the wedding ceremony between Romeo and Juliet takes place the Friar still believes that Romeo and Juliet are merely infatuated with each other and are not truly in love, but he agrees to marry them anyway. He does this because he still hopes that he could help bring their feuding families together. Friar Laurences sense of duty here identifies him as the peacemaker of the play. Ironically, his intentions were never truly fulfilled because the circumstances surrounding the marriage made it almost impossible for peace to occur. It is important to remember that the Friars impetus for all his actions in the play are initially to bring peace, and secondly to bring happiness to Romeo and Juliet. The friar could also be accused of being responsible for their death as he occasionally acted irresponsibly. With good intensions he sends Romeo to Mantua, gives Juliet a powerful drug and lies to Paris and Juliets family. When Juliet arises from her slumber, the friar flees, as he cannot face the tragedy of Romeos death, despite being accountable for the failed plan. This is a time of Unhappy fortune as things did not go as intended. When Paris is asks the friar to preside over his wedding to Juliet the next day. This causes great conflict for the Friar, because he knows the whole story, and he is very relieved to see Juliet appear at his chamber. After Paris leaves, Juliet begs the Friar to help her in her predicament. As a religious man, the Friar is also looking for a way to avoid doubly marrying Juliet, so he helps her plan her death. This was the final decision made by the friar. He did not think to look at other solutions, such as maybe stalling the wedding and proceed with th e ceremony later on. He acted hastily without thinking and contributed towards the death of the two lovers. Romeo and Juliet, being the protagonists of the play, contribute to the tragic events. They are equally to blame for their own death. Romeo shows a particular characteristic consisting of intense, passionate and impulsive behaviour throughout the play. He is engrossed by his emotions from his first appearance when he is sighing for Rosalind to his last when he kills himself for Juliet. He blames fate for his misfortune when things go wrong, most notably after killing Tybalt. O, I am fortunes fool! In support of Romeos belief that fate is to blame for everything, the prologue refers to the start crossed lovers and their death markd love, suggested that Romeo and Juliet were born to die tragically and nothing could have prevented it. Such as Romeos impulsive, passionate nature that, not only does he fall in love at first sight, he does not think about his actions. Throughout the whole play, the theme of haste and acting before you think is reiterated. Romeo falls into love too quickly and acts too hastily. He does not think about what might happen as a result of this speed of life as he does not think things through. At the beginning of the play, we first see war; and now we hear about love, as Benvolio describes the behaviour of his infatuated friend. Romeo is up before dawn, walking alone in the woods and weeping; when the sun rises, he hurries home and locks himself from the outside world. These are the early symptoms of unrequited love, although neither Benvolio nor Romeos parents appear to recognise this. We wait for Romeo to show us the extent of his love-sickness. He is miserable, however he enjoys his misery. What matters to Romeo is the emotion that he calls love. It makes him happy and at the same time, makes him sad. He tries to express these two conflicting states in a series of witty paradoxes- phrases, which seem absurd. These are also an ominous, foreboding sign, as they are ironic and connect with Juliets death, when she takes the drug; still-waking sleep. During the balcony scene, and then after his wedding night he doesnt give any thought to what Juliets family think. He would rather they find out and his life were better ended by their fate. Better to love and die than die without love; than death prorogued, wanting of thy love. This is ironic as Romeo did die for his love and ended this relationship with Juliet by departing with her through committing suicide out of love. Their engagement interprets a situation happening too quickly. Romeo shows significant queries about the sudden love between them, so thrive my soul-. He shows us that he hopes his soul will survive but in the end, we can see that it doesnt, but dies out along with his love for Juliet. When Friar Laurence offers the couple advice, wisely and slow, Romeo takes no notice. His emotions overcome him and he kills Tybalt, a disastrous action, which results in his banishment. He tries to avoid getting into a fight with Tybalt, proving that he is a powerful, yet resistive character, Doth much excuse the appertaining rage to such a greeting. However, the results draw nearer to a death. He did try to prevent the fights happening on the streets and was considerate about the people of Verona, forbid this bandying in Verona streets. Then, instead of facing upto his actions, Romeo falls into despair and wants to kill himself. He mistakes the sentence of banishment. He feels that this sentence is an easier punishment that death. He does not want to live without Verona walls. Similarly, Romeo is contributing to his own ending. He looks at banishment as death and feels he is married to death and disruption. At the end of the play, he comes into contact with death. Finally, if Romeo had waited a few seconds longer, before drinking the poison, he would have seen Juliet wake up, but, true to his character, he doesnt wait and tragically, this results in both his and Juliets death. I feel that if Romeo should not have been so quick thinking and taken into consideration what the outcome may have been and how each of the other characters felt about certain situations. He should have listened to friar Laurences guidance and remained as he was without marrying Juliet. On the other hand, Mercutios death was uncalled for and Romeo did not have to retaliate towards the Capulets household. For a moment, Romeo forgot about his new bride and retrieves his sword to attack her cousin in an act of vengeance for the death of Mercutio. Prince Escalus hears of the sequence of events from Benvolio and promises to strict justice. He lets Romeo hence in haste. This must be done, or all civil law will break down, and a state of anarchy will result; mercy but murders, pardoning those who kill. Due to the lack of responsibility and irrational thinking, Romeo rushed into his decisions and killed Tybalt out of reprisal. Had he thought about his actions, he would had stayed in Verona, prevented Juliet from drinking the drug; made by Friar Laurence, and be alive on this present day, living happily with his wife Juliet. They two families may have reconsidered and put away their differences. Committing suicide is Romeos final and most profound act in his pursuit of Juliet. On reflection, Juliets action and way of thinking also contributed towards to hers and Romeos death. Unlike Romeo, Juliet changes and progressively matures in the play. When she first appears in the play, she is obedient to her mother. However, once she falls in love with Romeo, she becomes more organised, thinks independently and soon defies her parents. As a result of this, she felt unaided and was left to seek advice from other characters, such as friar Laurence. After the Nurse leaves she says, Ancient damnation! O most wicked fiend, and then goes off alone to talk to the Friar. Lady Capulet, Juliets biological mother only tells her what to do, and has never been personally close with Juliet. When Juliet comes of age to get married, Lady Capulet wants her to marry Paris, and does not care how Juliet feels about it. Juliet tries to talk to her mother about it, and tell her that she does not want to marry Paris, but Lord Capulet walks in and angrily tells her that she will go and marry Paris even if he has to drag her there. Juliet again pleads with her mother to delay the marriage even for a week, but Lady Capulet only responds with, Talk not to me, for Ill not speak a word. Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee. Later on in the play Juliet finally gets the confidence to stand up against her parents, when they tell her that she will be marrying Paris. Juliet tells her mother, I will not marry yet, and when I do I swear, it shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, Rather than Paris. These are news indeed! A couple days prior to this, Juliet would not have had the confidence and maturity to speak up against her parents wishes. For example, in Act I, scene 3 Lady Capulet asks Juliet if she has thought of marriage, and when Juliet says no, Lady Capulet says, Well, think of marriage now. Juliet does not argue at all, and tells her mother she will do what she orders. If she had listened to her parents, the death could have been prevented and instead of seeking advice from friar Laurence, Juliet would have married Paris. Verona is a patriarchal city, which means that fathers hold absolute power over their daughters. They may give them to whomever they choose, and feel deeply insulted if their daughters dare to choose otherwise. Juliet chose to differ with her father and disobeyed his wish to marry Paris. One might imply that if she has married Paris, her father would not have cruelly commented on her, calling her a green-sickness carrion and tallow face. If Capulet had listened to his daughter, she would not have been ungrateful. Unlike the situation with Juliets parents, her behaviour towards Romeo equally contributes to the events leading upto her own, as well as Romeos death. Like Romeo, Juliet was too swift into rushing into marriage. She was already partly married to Paris at the time of the ball, and until then, had been happy with her parents choice. She says tell my lord and father, madam, I will not marry yet. She knows that this secret marriage with Romeo will upset her parents to a further point, my only love sprung from my only hate but she still continues with the marriage in secret. If Juliet had not been so fickle as to fall in love with Romeo on the night of the masquerade, they both may still have kept their lives. Upon marrying Romeo, Juliet is quite joyous and believes her troubles are over; however, her hasty decision actually becomes the beginning of many troubles to come. Juliet is different from Romeo in the fact that she does not blame fate for the things that go wrong, she blames her birth as we here in these rhyming couplets Prodigious birth of love is to me, that I must love a loathed enemy. There are many important points in the play, where I believe fate influenced certain people to make certain choices which affect the chain of events leading to Romeo and Juliets deaths. Unlike the intentions of the other characters in the play, it can also be believed that the tragedy was not the fault of any one individual but happened because of bad luck. It was fate that Romeo and Juliet met and fell in love, and was a misfortune that the letter, which could have saved them, didnt reach Romeo in time. Fate seemed to control both of the lovers lives and force them together, becoming the ultimate controlling power in this play even if it is not recognised however in the prologue there is a chosen identity of starts a pair star-crossed lovers. A large part of the beliefs for both Romeo and Juliet involved fate, they believed in the stars and that their actions were not always there own, Romeo for example says some consequence yet hanging in the starsby some vile forfeit of untimely death. But hath the steerage over my course direct sail. He is simply saying to his friends he had a dream, which lead him to believe that he will die young because of something in the stars, something that will happen. The only instance of fate managed to direct Romeo into its web like a spider. Conversely, Romeo is continually in control of his own actions, yet he blames fate through astrological imagery. As he drinks his potion he blames fate, but he is the one who looks for the apothecary, and makes the description of what kind of poison he wants. An example of one of the characters from the play referring to fate is when Mercutio attempts to make Romeo go to the Capulet dance. Romeo eventually agrees, but he still feels uneasy: I fear, too early: for my mind misgives Some consequence yet hanging in the stars Shall bitterly begin his fearful date This reference to the play shows that Romeo never felt happy with the idea of going to the Capulet party in the first place. If he had trusted his instincts and refused to go, the deaths of the two lovers may have been averted. By including these foreboding lines, Shakespeare suggests to the audience that the ultimate destiny of Romeo and Juliet was, in fact, fated. Friar Lawrence refers to fate when he is told that Romeo did not receive his vitally important letter. Unhappy fortune! By my brotherhood, the letter was not nice but full of charge. This quotation displays the worry of the Friar as he realises the disastrous consequences that could unfold if Romeo does not receive his letter in time. Shakespeare could have phrased this sentence differently to place the blame upon the messenger, but instead he expresses it as though it was the fault of fortune. On the other hand, an argument can be made that the conclusion of the play may have been more tragic if Romeo and Juliet had of survived and lived depressed, but without a doubt, either way, the Friar would have been involved. Extract the Friar from the story of Romeo and Juliet, and one may find that there would not have even been a story. The Friar is an extremely important character. In conclusion I feel that each of the main characters contributed towards the tragedy consisting of Romeo and Juliets death. The hasty marriage, wrongful use of the potion, failure to send the letter, and selfishness of the Friar are the causes for the deaths that occurred in the play. In spite of the many coincidences and references to heaven and stars, Romeo and Juliet however, is not totally a tragedy of fate. Each character has his/her freewill and is responsible for his/her actions. The substantial events that inspire the conclusion of Romeo and Juliet are; the Capulet ball, the quarrel experienced by Tybalt and Romeo, and Friar Johns plague. The Capulet ball influences the ending of the play by Romeos invitation at the ball, which creates the meeting of Romeo and Juliet. The ball also gives birth to Tybalts anger and causes his challenge. The challenge causes the banishment of Romeo, which produces much grieving by Juliet and Romeo. Since Friar John did not deliver the letter, Romeo thinks that Juliet is dead, sacrifices himself. Juliet seeing that Romeo is dead, slays herself also. It could be said that fate has no part at all in the Romeo and Juliet play, that it all happened of its own accord, and this could be possible. Personally, I think that too many things would have had to happen consequentially for it to all happen by chance I still believe that Shakespeare was still hinting at the prospect of justice; that wrong doings will be punished in some way or other. Basically, I think that Romeo found true love, and paid the price for trying to get everything he wanted. He was initially put into a very difficult situation, from which an unfortunate chain of events couldnt be stopped from arising. From my essay I can conclude that from the many references to stars and from the consequential sequence of events, that I thoroughly believe that Shakespeare intended to clearly state that fate had a definite part in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet should be designated as the failure of human responsibility or human error rather than fate. Who should be blamed for this tragedy may remain long controversial, but the story of the two star-crossed lovers will remain timeless in the world of literature. For never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo

WEaknesses of the UK Parliamen essays

WEaknesses of the UK Parliamen essays What accounts for the weakness of the UK Parliament? The UK Parliament has certain weaknesses. This essay will identify and analyse five of the major weaknesses. Firstly, I will argue that the Parliament is not a true representation of the electorate. Then, I will look at claim that the strong party system and the whip system cause weaknesses within Parliament. Thirdly, I shall argue that the committee system within Parliament does not effectively scrutinise the workings of government departments. Fourthly, I will address the claim that because of the House of Lords only having limited powers and because it is not sufficiently independent or representative, it is unable to legitimate the actions of the government and finally, I will argue that external bodies reduce the strength of Parliament. The primary role of the Parliament is that of manifest legitimation- giving the formal seal of approval ii. The weaknesses in Parliament cause inefficient procedures and in the end may cause the Parliament to be unable to effectively legit imate the actions and policies of the government. Parliament is not a true representation of the electorate, regarding both the electorates choice of MPs or the representation of the needs and characteristics of the electorate. The first-past-the-post (FPP) electoral system of does not give a fair representation of the views of the electorate. The FPP is good on the account of it keeping extremist parties at bay and it maintains the local base for MPs. This system is can give absolute majorities in Parliament to parties with considerably less than 50 per cent of the vote. This is useful in creating an effective legislative majority to enable the bills to be passed quickly and with little debate. However, I believe that the FPP system is unrepresentative. It exaggerates the lead of the winning partyi, for example in the 1992 General Elections, the Conservative Party ...

Is Radical Enhancement of the Human Species Ethically Justified Term Paper

Is Radical Enhancement of the Human Species Ethically Justified - Term Paper Example To discuss on this topic, this essay shall compare and contrast two texts; ‘Humanity’s end’ by Nicholas Agar and ‘Better than human’ by Allen Buchanan. Arguments for this paper get based on the works of the two authors who get to provide a little more insight into bioethics. In ‘humanity’s end’, Agar argues against radical enhancement of the human species. He explains the destructive consequences that may arise out of radical enhancement of the human species. In his book, Agar argues against the ideas proposed by four radical enhancement thinkers (Agar 11). He explains that the results of radical advancement may have more negative outcomes than positives proposed by the four thinkers. Agar argues that some radical enhancements, especially germline engineering, may end the human species. In ‘better than human’ Allen Buchanan argues for radical enhancement. He proposes that human beings should become open to the idea of getting better than they already are since the human body design does contain flaws. He argues that radical enhancements could make the human species smarter, stronger, have more stamina, live longer and have better memories. Buchanan argues that people reject biomedical enhancements due to a poor understanding, misleading information or false assumptions (Buchanan 19). In his book, Agar argues against radical enhancement by claiming it has the potential to destroy human species. Agar argues that radical enhancement technology may re-speciate human beings (Agar 46). He claims the advances made by technology can define a new breed of human species. This species will pose a threat or endanger the already existing human species that belongs to Homo sapiens. Agar argues that there is no evidence that creation of post humans through radical enhancement will share values, relationships or culture with humans. There is the possibility that gene mutations may occur later and significantly a ffect the enhanced species. Meanwhile in his book, Buchanan arguing for radical enhancement postulates that making small changes to the structure of humans does not mean that the entire human structure gets changed. He also argues that alterations to the human species do not entirely mean that it would have a negative effect to the species. He states that these alterations become simply targeted at creating and improving the performances of current human capacities (Buchanan 65). He views enhancements as a means of relieving pain and suffering from human lives and not species endangerment. Enhancements according to Buchanan will be a way of improving the quality of human life. According to Buchanan, radical enhancement makes human life to be easier. He argues that through radical enhancement, human beings get to be able to improve their operation capacities. He argues that radical enhancement will increase human intelligence, physical strength, and lifespan (Buchanan 139). Buchanan questions why humans should be against these advances when they are only going to improve their life. He argues that radical enhancement will make life become more convenient for humans. Arguing against these advances, Agar pinpoints that human beings may in the process loose a valuable human experience. By increasing human intelligence levels and lifespan there is the possibility that human beings will delete experiences of great value from their lives (Agar 140). Increasing human in

The Framemakers - Case Study Example The Normans then leaves the family business to work out modalities for their personal business (Wesley, 2000). The case’s statement problem is therefore to determine the best business opportunity that can successfully meet the Norman’s ambition for expansion. Solving the problem would involve analysis of available alternatives (Wesley, 2000). The first alternative for the Normans is the family business that is already established but has little room for expansion. They can alternatively pursue the franchise business that has an already developed image but they will have to buy the goodwill and pay a regular commission from their revenues besides operational costs. The Normans can alternatively develop their own business. Even though this will have a slow start and would similarly require financial inputs, it is viable and has room for expansion (Wesley, 2000). The Normans should therefore work hard on the involveed modalities to set up their personal and independent business. This is because it has room for expansion and will be free from any form of external

Acquisition Strategies in DoD Procurements :: essays research papers

General Considerations Each PM must develop and document an acquisition strategy to guide program execution from initiation through reprocurement of systems, subsystems, components, spares, and services beyond the initial production contract award and during post-production support. The acquisition strategy evolves through an iterative process and becomes increasingly more definitive in describing the relationship of the essential elements of a program. A primary goal of the strategy is to minimize the time and cost it takes, consistent with common sense and sound business practices, to satisfy identified, validated needs, and to maximize affordability throughout a programs useful life cycle. In developing the acquisition strategy, the PM considers all policy guidance contained in the acquisition strategy portion on DoD 5000.2R. In documenting the acquisition strategy, the PM provides a complete picture of the strategy for the decision makers who will be asked to coordinate on or approve the strategy document. The PM ensures the document satisfies the requirements of DoD 5000.2R for the acquisition strategy to identify, address, describe, summarize, or otherwise document specific, major aspects or isues of the program or strategy. The PM develops the acquisition strategy in preparation initiation, prior to the program initiation decision, and updates it prior to all major program decision points or whenever the approved acquisition strategy changes or as the system approach and program elements become better defined. The PM engages the Working –Level Integrated Product Team (WIPT) and Operational Test Agency (OTA) in the development of the acquisition strategy, and obtains concurrence of the Program Executive Officer and Component Acquisition Executive , as appropriate. The Milestone Decision Authority approves the acquisition strategy prior to the release of the formal solicitation. Approval usually precedes each decision point, except at program initiation, when the acquisition strategy usually is approved as part of the milestone decision review. REQUIREMENTS The acquisition strategy provides a summary description of the requirement the acquisition is intended to satisfy. The summary highlights aspects of the requirement (1) driven by family-of-systems or mission area requirements for interoperability, and (2) that reflect dependency on planned capability being achieved by other programs. The summary also states whether the requirement is structured to achieve full capability in time-phased increments or in a single step. For time-phased requirements, define the block about to be undertaken, as well as subsequent blocks. The acquisition strategy identifies approved source documents constituting the authoritative definition of the requirement such as the Operational Requirements Document (ORD), Capstone Requirements Document (CRD), and Acquisition Program Baseline (APB).

Asperger Syndrome 3

Asperger syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder and is considered a high functioning form of Autism. Autism spectrum disorders are also known as pervasive developmental disorders and can affect social skills and communication. Asperger syndrome can also delay the development of motor skills and cause sensory problems. While there is no cure for Asperger syndrome, there are treatments to help teach the skills affected by Asperger to patients to help them cope with the disorder. Research is currently being conducted to find the causes of Asperger syndrome and other effective treatment methods. The symptoms of Asperger syndrome are caused by delays in several areas of development such as social skills, communication skills, motor skills, and language skills. Patients with Asperger syndrome can become over-focused on a single topic or object and will want to know everything about the topic and will talk very little about anything else. Their areas of interest may be extremely narrow and they will often rattle off facts about their topic of interest with no conclusion or connection to conversation (Asperger Syndrome-PubMed Health). Asperger patients also exhibit social awkwardness and have trouble forming relationships. Eye contact, use of facial expressions, and body language are impaired in patients and can inhibit regulation of social interaction. Patients may also lack emotional empathy and the ability to recognize social cues (OASIS @ MAAP – What Is Asperger Syndrome? . Speech may have a lack of rhythm, odd inflection, or a monotone pitch in patients with Asperger syndrome. They may also lack the control to match the volume of their voice to their surroundings (Asperger Syndrome Fact Sheet). Asperger syndrome patients may show delays in motor development and exhibit unusual physical behaviors such as repetitive arm flapping, twisting, or other whole body movements (Asperger Syndrome – PubMed Healt h). Asperger syndrome is very difficult to diagnose. People with Asperger syndrome often function very well in everyday life, so the signs and symptoms exhibited are often just recognized as â€Å"quirks† or a way of just being different. If a child exhibits any symptoms of Asperger syndrome, it is extremely important to seek the help of a doctor and they will refer you to a mental health professional or a specialist for further evaluation. A â€Å"psychological exam† will be performed to compile a history of when the symptoms first apeared, the development of motor skills and language patterns, and other aspects of behavior and ersonality. The earlier an evaluation is conducted, the sooner treatments can be started to improve a child’s development with Asperger syndrome (Asperger Syndrome). Asperger syndrome has no cure, but with treatments and medications, many children with Asperger syndrome grow into well-developed, productive adults. The majority of diagnosed children benefit from specialized treatments that f ocus on social skills training and behavior management. Some of these treatments include communication and social skills training and cognitive behavioral therapy. There are no medications that specifically treat Asperger syndrome, but there are some medications that can help improve symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and hyperactivity including Aripiprazole, Guanfacine, Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, Risperidone, Olanzapine, and Naltrexone (Staff, Mayo Clinic). Parent training is also helpful in continuing treatment at home and teaches parents techniques to be used at home to better their child’s development (Asperger Syndrome – PubMed Health). Research is currently being conducted to understand the causes of Asperger syndrome and to find more effective treatments. A study is currently being conducted using functional magnetic resonance imaging to show how abnormalities in particular areas of the brain can cause the symptoms of Asperger syndrome and autism spectrum disorders. There is also a large-scale study comparing neuropsychological and psychiatric assessments of children with possible diagnoses of Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism to those of their parents and sibling to try to identify any patterns of symptoms that link Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism to any specific neuropsychological profiles. A long-rang international study conducted by a collection of scientists from universities, academic centers, and institutions from around the world to collect and analyze DNA sample from children with Asperger syndrome and high-function autism, along with their families, to identify associated genes and how they interact. This study is better known as the Autism Genome Project and functions as a repository for genetic data so that researchers can try to find the genetic â€Å"building blocks† of Asperger syndrome an autism spectrum disorders (Asperger Syndrome Fact Sheet). Asperger syndrome is a high-functioning form of autism and is considered an autism spectrum disorder. It delays the development of many areas such as communication and social skills. Even though there is no cure for Asperger syndrome, with the right treatments and medications, most children with a diagnosis of Asperger syndrome and their families learn to cope with the symptoms of this disorder. Many adults with Asperger syndrome can develop to be happy, well-functioning, and productive adults with successful mainstream jobs and lead fulfilling independent lives with the right kind of treatment plans and support available to them. Biography of Carl Jung Founder of Analytical Psychology

Carl Gustav Jung (July 26, 1875 – June 6, 1961) was an influential psychologist who established the field of analytical psychology. Jung is known for his theorizing about the human unconscious, including the idea that there is a collective unconscious all people share. He also developed a type of psychotherapy—called analytical therapy—that helped people to better understand their unconscious mind. Additionally, Jung is known for his theorizing about how personality types, such as introversion and extroversion, shape our behavior. Early Life and Education Jung was born in 1875 in Kesswil, Switzerland. Jung was the son of a pastor, and even from an early age he showed an interest in trying to understand his inner mental life. He studied medicine at the University of Basel, where he graduated in 1900; he then studied psychiatry at the University of Zurich. In 1903, he married Emma Rauschenbach. They were married until Emma died in 1955.   At the University of Zurich, Jung studied with psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler, who was known for studying schizophrenia. Jung wrote a doctoral dissertation about occult phenomena, focusing on  a person who claimed to be a medium. He attended the sà ©ances she held as part of his dissertation research. From 1905 until 1913, Jung was a faculty member at the University of Zurich. Jung also co-founded the International Psychoanalytic Society in 1911. In the early 1900s, Sigmund Freud became a friend and mentor to Jung. Both Jung and Freud shared an interest in trying to understand the unconscious forces affecting people’s behavior. However, Freud and Jung disagreed on several aspects of psychological theory. While Freud believed that the unconscious mind consisted of desires that people have repressed, especially sexual desires, Jung believed that there are other important motivators of human behavior besides sexuality. Additionally, Jung disagreed with Freud’s idea of the Oedipus complex. Jung went on to develop his own theories, known as Jungian or analytical psychology. In 1912, Jung published an influential book in psychology, Psychology of the Unconscious, which diverged from Freud’s views. By 1913, Freud and Jung had experienced a falling out. Development of Jungian Psychology In Jung’s theory, there are three levels to consciousness: the conscious mind, the personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious. The conscious mind refers to all the events and memories that we are aware of. The personal unconscious refers to events and experiences from our own past that we are not fully conscious of. The collective unconscious refers to symbols and cultural knowledge that we may not have experienced firsthand, but which still affect us. The collective unconscious consists of archetypes, which Jung defined as  Ã¢â‚¬Å"ancient or archaic images that derive from the collective unconscious.† In other words, archetypes are important concepts, symbols, and images in human culture. Jung used masculinity, femininity, and mothers as examples of archetypes. Although  we are typically unaware of the collective unconscious, Jung believed that we could become aware of it, especially through trying to remember our dreams, which often incorporate elements of the collective unconscious. Jung saw these archetypes as human universals that we are all born with. However, the idea that we can inherit archetypes has been criticized, with some critics pointing out that it might not be possible to test scientifically whether these archetypes are indeed truly innate. Research on Personality In 1921, Jung’s book Psychological Types was published. This book introduced  several different personality types, including introverts and extroverts. Extroverts tend to be outgoing, have large social networks, enjoy attention from others, and enjoy being part of large groups. Introverts also have close friends they care deeply about, but they tend to need more alone time, and may be slower to show their true selves around new people. In addition to introversion and extroversion, Jung also introduced several other personality types, including sensing and intuition as well as thinking and feeling. Each personality type corresponds to the different ways people approach the world around them. Importantly, however, Jung also believed that people are capable of acting in ways consistent with a personality type other that their own dominant type. For example, Jung believed that an introvert could attend a social event they might normally skip. Importantly, Jung saw this as a way for people to grow and to achieve individuation. What Is Jungian Therapy? In Jungian therapy, also called analytical therapy, therapists work with clients to try to understand the unconscious mind and how it might be affecting them. Jungian  therapy attempts to address the root cause of a client’s problems, instead of just addressing the symptoms or behaviors that are bothering the client. Jungian therapists may ask their clients to keep a journal of their dreams, or to complete word association tests, in order to better understand their client’s unconscious mind. In this therapy, the goal is to better understand the unconscious and how it affects our behavior. Jungian psychologists acknowledge that this process of understanding the unconscious may not always be pleasant, but Jung believed that this process of understanding the unconscious was a necessary one. The goal of Jungian therapy is to achieve what Jung termed individuation. Individuation refers to the process of integrating all past experiences—good and bad—in order to live a healthy, stable life. Individuation is a long-term goal, and Jungian  therapy isn’t about helping clients find a â€Å"quick fix† for their problems. Instead, Jungian therapists focus on addressing the root causes of problems, helping clients gain a deeper understanding of who they are, and helping people live more meaningful lives. Additional Writings by Jung In 1913, Jung began writing a book about his own personal experience of trying to understand his unconscious mind. Over the course of years, he recorded visions he had, accompanied by drawings. The end result was  a journal-like text with a mythological perspective that was not published in Jungs lifetime.  In 2009, Professor  Sonu Shamdasani received permission from Jung’s family to publish the text as The Red Book. Alongside his colleague Aniela Jaffà ©, Jung also wrote  about his own life in Memories, Dreams, Reflections, which he began writing in 1957 and  was published in 1961. Legacy of Jung’s Work After Jung’s death in 1961, he continued to remain an influential figure in psychology. Although Jungian or analytical therapy is no longer a widely used form of therapy, the technique still has devoted practitioners and therapists  continue to offer it. Moreover, Jung remains influential because of his emphasis on trying to understand the unconscious.   Even psychologists who don’t consider themselves Jungians may still have been influenced by his ideas. Jungs work on personality types has been particularly influential over the years. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was based on the personality types outlined by Jung. Other widely used measures of personality also incorporate concepts of introversion and extroversion, although they tend to see introversion and extroversion as two ends of a spectrum, rather than two distinct  personality types. Carl Jung’s ideas have been influential both in psychology and outside of academia. If you’ve ever kept a dream journal, tried to become aware of your unconscious mind, or referred to yourself as an introvert or extrovert, then there’s a good chance that you’ve been influenced by Jung.
